The reserve was created by the Tanzanian government in 1994 in order to protect the path of the annual wildebeest migration and the indigenous biodiversity of this vast and important ecosystem.
In 2002, American philanthropist Paul Tudor Jones was granted the right to manage and conserve these concession areas and made it his personal mission to rehabilitate and restore the land to its former glory.

In 2006, Grumeti joined with world-renowned safari brand Singita as its hospitality partner. Dedicated to environmentally conscious hospitality, sustainable conservation and the empowerment of local communities, the Singita brand is highly acclaimed for its exceptional safari offering that creates truly life-changing experiences for guests, and in turn transforms lives, sustains conservation efforts and benefits surrounding communities.
Grumeti Reserves is recognised as a benchmark in ecotourism and with ever-increasing wildlife numbers, the area has become a safari destination that showcases the Serengeti as never before. In keeping with the company’s world-class operating standards and its deep commitment to skills development, local staff have become heroes of the guest experience – chefs, housekeepers, waiters, guides, and support staff, all trained and inspired to deliver a truly memorable guest experience.
