This team is responsible for asset protection, staff and guest safety, and occupational health and safety protocols and procedures. Key to their operations is the central communications office, staffed 24/7/365 by a well-trained team who receive information from across the property, coordinating with the lodges and guides, the airstrip, and many others, streamlining data throughout the day to ensure a real time view that supports the best deployment of security resources as needed.

John Senteu, Head of Security at Grumeti Reserves, epitomises dedication, leadership, and resilience. Growing up in the beautiful landscape of the Serengeti, John has been a cornerstone of Grumeti operations for 15 years, rising from the role of Security Supervisor to his current position as head of the department.
With a steadfast commitment to safeguarding the people, guests, and assets of Grumeti Reserves, John oversees a team of more than 60 askaris. These vigilant guards are strategically positioned across the concession, creating a protective web that ensures a secure environment for everyone within its boundaries.
John’s journey at Grumeti Reserves began in 2009, when the company operated only three lodges – Sasakwa, Sabora and Faru Faru. Reflecting on those early days, John recalls a period of mostly manual operations and sometimes limited resources. However, over the years, he has both witnessed, and been an integral part, of a transformative evolution. Today, Grumeti Reserves boasts seven lodges, and the security department has embraced modern technologies and enhanced protocols, utilising digital devices to augment their operations.

A pivotal figure in the Operations Room, John is at the heart of the company’s information flow. This dynamic hub – often described as the lifeblood of Grumeti Reserves, relies on John’s expertise to process, prioritise, and disseminate critical data. His role as a key contact for all intelligence and any incidents ensures that the reserve operates smoothly and efficiently, with safety always a top priority.
One of John’s most cherished aspects of his job is the opportunity for personal and professional growth. He values the strong sense of teamwork that permeates the security department, where collaboration and mutual support are fundamental. This environment not only enhances his team’s operational effectiveness but also creates a strong sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.
As a guardian of this remarkable reserve, John continues to inspire and lead, ensuring that Grumeti Reserves remains a secure and thriving sanctuary for people and wildlife alike.
